Landmark & Mills Workshop

MOHPG encourages all owners of vintage structures to consider applying for historic landmark designation. The process is very straightforward, and there is a financial incentive that could be very significant - depending on when you purchased and your tax basis (please consult a tax advisor for any specific tax impact). The combination of Landmarking / Mill's Act Contracting helps to ensure your vintage structure will remain intact - and can provide financial assistance to help with maintenance and upkeep.

There are obligations and commitments associated with both landmarking and Mill's Act contracts. You should be aware of what the consequences of these are. To help you to better understand the process and the implications, MOHPG has developed a reference guide. This was first produced and presented at a Landmarking workshop hosted in conjunction with the City of Monrovia in 2006. KGEM recorded that workshop and copies are available from MOHPG and KGEM.

We encourage you to look through this information (Adobe Acrobat viewer is required - it's free). Contact MOHPG or the Planning Department at the City of Monrovia to obtain applications and further information. Along the way, be sure to spend some time at the Monrovia Library - where MOHPG has assembled a tremendous set of resources that will help you do research on the history of your structure.
